Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with that one; perhaps you received a bad one. There are couple things you can do.
1.) Make sure that your hands are as close to the jaws of the wire stripper as possible and that you have a good grip on the wire when attempting to strip it.
2.) If the jaws of the wire stripper are unaligned then there can be a gap and nicking of the wire is possible. Take two quarters, insert them into the jaws and squeeze down. This should realign the jaws better.
3.) If both methods fail then feel free to send it back to us and we will make sure we send you out one that works on phone wire.

I tried these strippers on common telephone/LAN wire, 24 gauge solid copper with plastic insulation. After stripping less than ten wires, the stripping became very erratic. Sometimes it would only strip half the intended length, sometimes it would not strip at all. It also began putting nicks in the copper. When it cut a wire rather than strip it, I tossed it.
Back to the traditional wire strippers.
